For several years leading up to the formation of MyLabsDirect, our team owned and operated a small independent laboratory that maintained the highest level of accreditation standards in the lab industry.
Despite an excellent reputation, we still struggled each and every day to survive in an industry controlled by insurance companies.
Over the years, we began to recognize a growing number of patient insurance plans sent to us with extremely high deductibles and limited lab benefit coverage. This started to create major issues for our lab.
We found that most of the services we performed were either not getting covered or they were posting to patient deductibles.
This forced us to chase down our payments directly from patients. When we encountered a plan that had good benefit coverage, our services were still routinely denied, forcing us into an expensive and time consuming appeals process to receive payment from the carrier.
We started to accept the notion that the denials were simply a ploy by the insurance carriers to delay paying us. We realized that being in a business where we were dependent upon insurance companies that seemed focused on putting us out of business wasn’t really a great business to be in at all.
This, combined with story after story from patients and doctors frustrated and confused over surprise lab bills and overinflated rates, we finally decided that enough was enough and formed MyLabsDirect.
We knew that we could take all of our experience in running an amazing lab directly to the consumer. We could reduce expenses by eliminating an entire billing and collections department and pass these savings down to the consumer.
We also realized that if we actually got paid for our services, we could confidently offer upfront pricing and a better experience overall.
