HbA1c (also called Hemoglobin A1c) is a blood test that provides an average of your blood glucose (sugar) levels over the past 2 to 3 months. It measures the percentage of hemoglobin (a protein in red blood cells) that has glucose attached to it. This is important because when blood sugar levels are high, glucose attaches to hemoglobin, and the higher the blood sugar, the more glucose becomes attached.
Why is HbA1c important?
Diagnosing diabetes: It is used to diagnose prediabetes and diabetes. If your HbA1c level is above a certain threshold, it indicates that your blood sugar levels are consistently too high.
Monitoring diabetes: For people already diagnosed with diabetes, the HbA1c test helps track how well blood sugar has been controlled over time. Regular testing allows doctors to adjust treatment plans accordingly.
HbA1c Levels:
Normal: Less than 5.7%
Prediabetes: 5.7% to 6.4%
Diabetes: 6.5% or higher
Why does it reflect blood sugar over time?
Red blood cells live for about 120 days, so the HbA1c test provides a longer-term picture of your blood sugar control. It’s useful because it doesn’t require fasting like some other tests, and it gives an overall view of your glucose levels, not just a snapshot of what they were at a single moment.

What this Test measures
hbA1c
HbA1c measures the average amount of glucose in your blood over the past 90 days. It shows the amount of glucose attached to hemoglobin (which is the part of your red blood cells that carries oxygen from your lungs to the rest of your body). It’s used to help detect and diagnose prediabetes and diabetes. If you have diabetes, measuring your HbA1c levels routinely will help you and your doctor manage the disease.
High HbA1c levels may indicate you have diabetes, or are prediabetic. High HbA1c levels might indicate anemia, liver disease, kidney failure and sickle cell disease.

Low HbA1c levels can be caused by conditions that decrease red blood cell levels, such as alcohol, liver disease, genetic disorders and some drugs and supplements.

No, you do not need to fast before getting an HbA1c test.
MLD’s Diabetic Risk At Home test results will provide detailed information regarding your HbA1c levels. An HbA1c test result is reported as a percentage – this number represents the portion of hemoglobin proteins that are holding glucose. The higher the percentage, the higher your blood sugar levels have been over the last 90 days.
Please prepare to test first thing in the morning. Be sure to drink plenty of water before testing! Being well hydrated will help increase blood flow and improve the testing experience.
Your results can be easily shared with your healthcare provider, and in fact, we encourage you to share your data in order to obtain the treatment you might need.
